![]() Sure, it’s not cutting edge, but No More Heroes looks nice on the Switch and is super smooth to play. I wasn’t fussed on the visuals as was happy to be playing this on the Switch, so imagine my surprise when the visuals have been fitted with super sharp HD visuals. A bit like those FMVs from the likes of Command & Conquer (ask your nan). Watching the opening cutscenes looked quite choppy, and that’s because it was lifted from the original and not much one can do to revamp it. The writing is brilliant, but the acting is a little on the hammy side for a lot of characters, but it feels appropriate, given the content. While the humour and insanity are on par with Japanese comedy, it’s entirely relatable for Western audiences. No More Heroes is most definitely a quirky title though, and there’s not much else like it. There’s a lot of in-jokes and pop culture references that I was mostly wiping the drool off my chops the more and more I played. The writing is brilliant, but the acting is a little on the hammy sideīetween side quests and assassination attempts, Travis can lollop around in his apartment watching clips from cutscenes unlocked, choose from an array of flamboyant apparel from his wardrobe and more. It’s not a bad bike – quite the opposite, but driving around town is a little like Deadly Premonition 2 on a skateboard, and there’s only so many people that can tolerate that, eh Zach? Jobs are just part of the filler, as is getting around town on your wannabe Akira motorbike. You’ll do random side quests such as collecting and selling coconuts to make enough to secure your place in the claret palace. To claim a life and climb the ranks, you have to pay a fee, and that means earning money. No More Heroes isn’t a simple ten stage slash-fest, and then it’s over. But the assassination game is a contradiction: you have to pay for the assassination. Hence the vulgarity at the start of this review: if dicks, farts and boobies makes you laugh, you’ll enjoy No More Heroes.Įach boss feels quite epic in the build-up chat before the fight begins and it feels like an accomplishment to defeat them in a gruesome execution, moderately rewarded with Sylvia showing up and flashing some thigh. While the primary levels are mostly the same throughout, I never tired of the button mashing and exploding blood pool of coins after splitting a suited villain in half.īefore reaching the boss of each level, you’ll get the opportunity to save the game a process where Travis takes his place on the throne to have a dump, before moving on. No More Heroes‘ level design is pretty poor, and it’s not that distant from a PS2 game, but it’s the sheer variety, wit and absurdity of it all that makes it so enjoyable. I never tired of the button mashing and exploding blood pool of coins It’s incredibly repetitive, and the music more so. The ‘main’ missions in the game are the assassinations on the top ten, and that is built around seemingly endless corridors, killing all the lesser enemies to unlock the next area. Getting up close and personal in these third-person battles with henchmen feature many QTE where you will perform a finishing move which has your opponent explode in a confetti of coins reminiscent of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, or you might pull off a suplex too, complimenting the wrestling fascination. Combat is simplicity in itself as you can perform energy-based attacks with a mix of combos and charged moves, as well as stun attacks. He sports a Teddy Boy fashion sense, but donned in some wicked t-shirt designs, a cutting sense of humour and more importantly, he wields a beam katana (no similarity to any other franchise set in the stars, lawyers). ![]() His motivation? To hook up with the femme fatale of the story, Sylvia. Goichi Suda, is one of the few people in the industry known by name alone – coincidentally, they often tend to be Japanese developers…Īrguably a passion project of everything a hairy-palmed teenager would like motorbikes, boobs, gaming, boobs, wrestling and boobs, the plot in No More Heroes revolves around Travis climbing the ranks of the world’s top killers. The brainchild of gaming auteur Suda51 (also wrestling obsessed), he was also responsible for the likes of Killer7 and Lollipop Chainsaw. ![]() Originally a Nintendo Wii exclusive – which is a shock in itself, No More Heroes is finally available on the Switch, courtesy of the marvellous people at, well, Marvelous. That sounds like a stereotype, but Travis is far cooler than that: he’s an assassin, and a decent one too. Trepang2 PC Review – Two Words: Bloody Hell! ![]()

It is a complete mystery as to what role sea spiders play in the larger scheme of things and we can only contemplate Aristotle’s words: “nature does nothing that lacks purpose”. At some stage of their life cycle pycnogonids commonly parasitise a soft-bodied host. Two genera live among the sand grains or in the sediments with records of specimens burrowing to a depth of 80 cm. By treading water rapidly they can lift into the water column where they are carried spread-eagled by deep-sea currents possibly over vast distances with little further effort. Most pycnogonids recovered on this trip are capable swimmers and are found worldwide. Like all Arthropods, they need to moult to grow and lost limbs are regenerated with subsequent moults. The male pycnogonid carries the eggs, although species of Colossendeis have never been recorded carrying eggs. By treading water rapidly they can lift into the water column to be carried spread-eagled by deep-sea currents. Most of the sea spiders recovered on this voyage are capable swimmers and are found worldwide. Two 12-legged Antarctic species are now described, including Dodecolopoda mawsoni. Imagine the interest when explorer Douglas Mawson returned from the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition 1929-1931 with a 12-legged specimen. In 1830, American naturalist James Eights returned from the South Shetlands with the first 10-legged specimen which he described as Decolopoda australis. Six more 10-legged sea-spider species have since been recorded. These have been caught on our voyage, and one found on a recent Great Australian Bight voyage had a span of 60 cm. Members of the genus Colossendeis are the giants of the pycnogonid world. Classification within the group is based on the presence, absence or degree of development of several appendages.Įxtraordinarily, the Pycnogonida includes forms with eight, 10 and 12 legs that span a few millimeters to 75 cm. The key to their longevity possibly lies with their morphological simplicity and apparent absence of predators. The name ‘sea spider’ is a later introduction that is in common use today.įossil evidence extending from about 425 million years ago suggests that the sea spiders are among the oldest surviving Arthropods to inhabit the earth. With their long, gangly legs these animals bear a striking resemblance to land spiders and it is little wonder that early naturalists classified pycnogonids in the same genus as shepherd spiders or ‘daddy-longlegs’. Several of the latter forms have been collected on this trip. In the deep-sea, many species have only two and some deep-sea species are blind. Most pycnogonids have four eyes, but a few have eight. You may well ponder, are they in fact alive? ![]() They are little more than a tube within a tube. There are no specific organs for respiration or digestion: respiration is by gaseous exchange through the cuticle wall, digestion is intracellular, and blood circulation is primarily activated by movement or pumping of the legs. ![]() Superficially, a sea spider appears to be little more than a collection of drinking straws.
